This volume contains The Imprisonment of Obatala, Everyman and Woyengi, which is based on ljaw tale. Obatala is based on a Yoruba myth, which explores the philosophy of Yoruba orisha worship. Everyman is an adaptation of Hugo von Hofmanthal's play, but the basic theme has been rethought entirely in Yoruba terms: thus the Christian mythology of Heaven and Hell has been replaced by the Yoruba concept of reincarnation. Everyman's greatest punishment would be to be 'thrown on the heaven of potsherds' - that is never to return to this earth again
